Checkmate in Batumi: Alpha Architecture Unveils Winning Design for New Chess Palace

Alpha Architecture is proud to announce its selection as the winner of the design competition for the Batumi Chess Palace. This landmark project harmonizes the intellectual rigor of chess with sustainable, modern architecture, creating a vibrant hub for players and the local community alike.

The Concept: A Masterclass in Form and Function

The design draws its soul from the game’s core identity. By translating the logic of the chessboard into physical space, the building becomes a living tribute to the "Game of Kings."

  • The Facade: Inspired by an unfolded chessboard, the building is wrapped in perforated solar shades. This black-and-white rhythmic pattern isn't just aesthetic; it serves as a modern interpretation of the board while providing essential climate control.
  • The "Tura" Entrance: Welcoming visitors at the main entrance is a large-scale bronze sculptural installation of a Rook (Chariot). This striking accent breaks the facade's symmetry and serves as a powerful symbol of the building's purpose.
  • Contextual Harmony: Despite its grand dimensions, the volume is meticulously adapted to the local landscape, ensuring the structure feels like a natural extension of Batumi’s urban fabric.

Sustainable Innovation: The Living Roof

The building’s roof is a functional masterpiece. Divided into a modular grid mimicking a chessboard, it alternates between:

  • Green Roof Modules: Enhancing biodiversity and natural insulation.
  • Solar Panel Modules: Providing the building with significant energy independence.

At the heart of these two sections sits a glass-enclosed winter garden, creating a lush, light-filled atrium that brings nature into the center of the architectural experience.
